What Are You Feeding Your Spirit?

When you wake up in the morning, what does your morning routine consists of? Maybe you complete your personal hygiene, pick out what you're going to wear for the day, eat breakfast, or if you're like me, maybe even try to squeeze in a morning workout? All of these things are great and essential, but does your morning routine include feeding your spirit what it needs? What most people don't realize, is that all throughout our day, we are feeding our spirit. When we watch television, when we listen to music, when we have conversations with people, what we look at on social media, what we read, and even who we spend most of our time around. All of these things contributes to feeding our spirit.

A question to ask yourself is this: "Is what I am allowing into my spirit nourishing or is it unhealthy?" One way for you to determine this is to observe your thoughts, your actions, and your attitude. Are your thoughts positive, or are they self-depleting, negative, and unhealthy thoughts? Is your attitude positive, confident, and kind? Or is your attitude hostile, pessimistic, and discouraging? What about your actions? Are they pleasant, helpful, and a true reflection of who you are? Or are they condescending and destructive? For example, if a car jumped in front of you in traffic, would you get upset and start saying hateful things to the car in front of you even though they can't hear you? (we've all been there at least once) or will you slow down and let the car proceed in front of you and keep your peace?

What is in you, will come out of you. That is why you should be cautious of what and who you allow to feed your spirit. What you feed your spirit will be recognizable on the outside by the way you interact, the way you speak to others, and the way you think. If you receive a phone call from someone speaking about nothing but problems, negativity, and bad news, the longer you are on that call, the more your spirit is being fed things that are unhealthy. When this happens, you have to be intentional about making sure your spirit is being nourished. Call someone who you know is always uplifting. Put on that praise and worship playlist (if you don't have one, you should make one. It'll bless your life). Or do what you know works for you to get your spirit back in alignment. I've had times where I would binge watch shows on Netflix that were drama-filled, and by the time I made it to the fifth episode, I'd noticed that my mind was so caught up in the show that my spirit felt completely unhealthy and malnourished. When this happened, I knew I had to take a break from watching that particular show.

As you can see, self-awareness plays a part in making sure you feed your spirit what it needs. You have to know yourself and be aware when something in your spirit feels out of alignment. For me, peace is the key factor. When I don't have peace I know that my spirit is lacking what it needs. Sometimes we may not realize exactly how unhealthy something is for our spirit until we've been in that environment too long. The good news? You have everything you need to make sure your spirit is nourished and healthy. You just have to be intentional.

P.S. You've got this. Like always, I'm rooting for you!
